What documents do I need to file my taxes?
▼
You'll typically need: W-2 forms from employers, 1099 forms for freelance or contract income, Social Security numbers for yourself and any dependents, your prior year tax return (if available), bank account information for direct deposit, and a government-issued photo ID. Business owners may also need profit/loss records, business expense receipts, and mileage logs.
What is the tax filing deadline?
▼
The federal tax filing deadline is typically April 15. If you need more time, you can file for an automatic 6-month extension (to October 15) — but note that an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Any taxes owed are still due by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties.
How long does it take to prepare my return?
▼
Most returns are completed within 3–5 business days once all required documents have been received. Complex returns (multiple businesses, real estate, multi-state filing) may take a few additional days. We'll keep you updated throughout the process and reach out if we need anything.
When can I expect my refund?
▼
Refund timing is determined entirely by the IRS — not by your tax preparer. E-filed returns with direct deposit typically result in a refund within 21 days. Paper-filed returns can take 6–8 weeks. You can check your refund status at IRS.gov using the "Where's My Refund?" tool.
What deductions can self-employed individuals claim?
▼
Self-employed individuals may be eligible for a wide range of deductions including: home office expenses, business mileage, health insurance premiums, self-employment tax deduction, retirement contributions (SEP IRA, Solo 401k), business equipment and supplies, professional development, and more. Every situation is different — Calandra will identify every deduction you're entitled to.
What if I receive an IRS notice?
▼
Don't panic — most IRS notices are routine. Do not ignore it, however. Contact Calandra as soon as possible with a copy of the notice. We'll review it, explain what it means, and advise you on the appropriate response. We're available year-round for exactly these situations.
Do I need to make quarterly estimated tax payments?
▼
If you're self-employed, a freelancer, or have significant income not subject to withholding, you likely need to make quarterly estimated payments to the IRS (and Arizona state). These are due in April, June, September, and January. Calandra can calculate your estimated payments and help you stay compliant year-round.
